Meet Taryn, a seasoned professional at the Centre, where she serves as the supervisor for Yorkville University Master of Counselling Practicum students. With over 20 years of experience as a Registered Psychologist in Alberta, Taryn has dedicated her career to supporting the personal growth and transformation of teens and adults.
Taryn's educational journey began in 2008 when she earned her Masters of Science in Couples and Family Therapy. Driven by a passion for continuous learning, she returned to university in 2015 to complete a postgraduate certificate in Health Psychology, further expanding her expertise in the field. As a result of her dedication and hard work, Taryn received her practice permit as a Registered Psychologist in Alberta in 2019.
Believing in the power of a holistic approach to health and healing, Taryn centres her therapeutic process on understanding the whole person. She applies a humanistic, trauma-informed lens to her practice, fostering a compassionate and empathetic environment for her clients.
Taryn's commitment to professional growth is evident in her pursuit of specialized training. Amber Skoczek is a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist with over thirteen years of experience in mental health and child and youth care. Based at the Centre for Mental Health and Addictions, Amber significantly contributes as a Clinical Supervisor. Her primary responsibility includes overseeing the Friday collaborative meetings, which are essential for the interns to discuss client cases confidentially, sharing experiences to enhance learning while ensuring client anonymity. This setting not only fosters mutual learning but also doubles as a weekly staff meeting where Amber occasionally conducts short seminars. Amber's professional journey also includes roles as a Psychotherapist at the Canadian Psychologists Network and Rooted Ambition Therapeutic Services. Specializing in trauma-informed care, she employs techniques like EMDR, IFS, and mindfulness. Amber's commitment to psychoeducation allows her to empower clients with effective coping strategies tailored to their developmental needs. She holds a Master of Social Work with a Clinical Specialization in Trauma-Informed Care from the University of Calgary, and additional credentials in Psychedelic Assisted Therapy, EMDR Basic Training, and EMDR with Children and Adolescents. Rene Ramirez is a registered provisional psychologist with a rich academic background and diverse linguistic abilities. He earned a Master's degree in Psychosocial Intervention and a Master's in Sex Therapy and Relationship Therapy, both from the University of Barcelona. Additionally, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from St. Mary’s University. Rene is fluent in English, Spanish, and French, enhancing his ability to connect with and assist clients from various cultural backgrounds. His therapeutic approach is both systemic and narrative, focusing on helping individuals reach their potential through tailor-made sessions that cater to their unique needs. Samuel Reichel is a counselling intern currently completing his Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. Samuel has a strong background in mental health, trauma-informed care, and culturally-informed practice. Samuel has a vested interest in helping others that is reflected in his work and personal experiences.
Samuel has worked for many years in the non-profit mental health sector in a variety of roles,
first starting as a volunteer for the Distress Centre Calgary and then as a peer mentor at his local university. Samuel gained several years of experience working with vulnerable populations at the Calgary Alpha House Society, where he worked closely with individuals in their detox, shelter,
and outreach programs. Samuel continues his work in non-profit mental health as a support for
individuals as they transition out of psychiatric care and into independent living. These experiences have shaped Samuel to place the utmost importance on building understanding, safe, and trusting relationships to pave the way for positive growth and change.
Samuel works from a person-centered lens and utilizes tailored treatment techniques that are unique to each individual. Samuel’s experiences have allowed him to work confidently with a variety of concerns including (but not limited to) anxiety, depression, work-related issues such as burnout or compassion fatigue, and couples or family issues.

Deepak Minhas is the writer of two books, No Straight Lines (prose and poems) and One Day at a Time (poems, prose and short stories). The short stories are vignettes of South Asian characters experiencing mental health issues such as homophobia, gender preference, and postpartum depression, in Canada and in India. Through the process of character development, Deepak developed a keen interest in the stories of people which opened the door to her pursuit of a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree.
Deepak’s therapeutic focus lies in holding space for her clients to process their lived experiences one moment at a time. She is empathetic, compassionate, and motivated to support her clients move forward in their life. Deepak’s areas of work include, but are not limited to, dual-identity conflict, grief and loss, and domestic and dating violence.
